Eloping Etiquette

You may not be aware of the proper eloping etiquette if this type of wedding is something you are considering. There actually are guidelines when it comes to eloping that help you deal with friends and family in the right way. First, make sure eloping is what you really want to do. It is certainly cheaper than a traditional wedding and takes very little time to plan. However in some families there may be hurt feelings by such a decision. The most important people to consult are parents. Some couples actually include their parents in the elopement process.

If you and/or your fiancee are close to Mom and Dad, you should inform your parents of your plans to elope. That way they won't be shocked when you return home and announce you're married. If the wedding is not something they would approve of, you might want to leave a message or letter explaining your plans beforehand rather than speaking to them in person. That way you won't become embroiled in any family arguments but won't feel bad because you did inform your parents.

Many couples who choose to run away and get married bring their family along with them. While the traditional elopement process includes only the bride and groom without guests, these days more couples are bringing a few guests along. You could choose to include your parents or other immediate family members. However other guests like acquaintances and friends may have to miss the ceremony. For them you may want to consider a party following your wedding so you can celebrate with all your loved ones.

Another important part of eloping etiquette is the announcement of your wedding after it has taken place. Announcing your wedding is a great time to invite friends and family who did not attend to a reception party. Most of the time a big gathering is the perfect way to soothe hurt feelings of loved ones who wanted to be involved in your big day and weren't. There are many reasons to elope, and the people who really care for you will respect your decision and understand your motivations. These days eloping is not anywhere as scandalous as it used to be, and remains a valid choice for engaged couples.
